You are the rock Sisyphus pushes up the hill
In the valley of the dead;
Hades’ graphite rolled up like a ball of yarn –
Don’t you get tired of almost reaching the top
Only to have someone mess up
Slip, stumble, trip
And send you down again?
Off the wall like Humpty Dumpty
Only you never get the chance to break
(Perhaps Humpty was right in giving up
Despite the king’s spears and hooves).
Why don’t you just crush Sisyphus
And roll down that hill to pastures green?
Are you afraid someone else would just use you?
Perhaps you’ve been used by many others before.
Roll on, mossy rock,
And slowly pick up the taxidermies of your past lovers.
You’ll one day be proud to show those scars:
“See what I’ve lived through already
And see the hills I could conquer with the right person.”
